Разница между предлогами ON и ONTO

Разница между предлогами on и onto проста: предлог on отображает состояние предмета, в то время как предлог onto – действие, движение.

Предлог on используется в том случае, когда мы говорим об объекте, который находится на какой-либо поверхности. Например, на стуле, на парте, на машине, на площадке и т.д. Для проверки задавайте вопрос «Где?».
Предлог onto используется, когда объект сам либо с чьей-то помощью перемещается на какую-либо поверхность. Здесь мы проверяем себя с помощью вопроса «Куда?».

There is pencil on the desk.
На парте лежит карандаш.

I put the pencil onto the desk.
Я положил карандаш на парту.
